The four-year Care for the Carers of the Terminally Ill project, run by Help the Hospices and funded by the 2005 Flora London Marathon and the Tubney Charitable Trust, started in January 2005.

The aims and objectives of the project:

Developing local services for carers

  • Major Grants, to create new support services that make a tangible difference for carers of the terminally ill.
  • A formal evaluation of the initiatives developed via the Major Grants programme.
  • A smaller Seedcorn Grants programme to 'kickstart' or pilot services for carers of the terminally ill.
  • The dissemination of learning from the funded projects via conferences.

National support and information services

  • The development and distribution of information for carers of the terminally ill.
  • Information for hospices and other professionals working with carers.
  • Online support for carers and professionals.
  • Workshops and events for hospice staff and other professionals.

Strategic Policy Activity

  • Research into employment issues and carers of the terminally ill.
  • Working with employers to develop support policies for carers.
  • The development of policy and practice in supporting carers of the terminally ill.
